Mimi Veralucia Ishan

Member, Advisory Board

Mimi is a passionate activist for women and the environment, with expertise in water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) and sustainable environment protection strategies in Africa.

She is a graduate of Geology and Mining from University of Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria. She worked with the Nigeria Government in Benue State, supervising work that provide access to water and sanitation for rural communities. Mimi worked with WaterAid for several years, leading projects that empower local women to take on leadership roles and advocate for access to water, sanitation and hygiene in rural and urban communities.

She was one of the pioneers of the innovative initiative – Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS), a strategy that builds the capacity of women to advance their engagement with power holders on total sanitation and hygiene and environmental protection. The initiative, which later spread across the 36 states of Nigeria and some West Africa countries is currently a recognised sustainable WASH approach across the world.

Mimi’s interest in the intersection of women’s rights, the environment and gender equality led to her engagement with several West African regional governments including Mali, Ghana, Burkina-Faso and Senegal sharing sustainable environmental protection strategies including replicating best practices from countries such as Bangladesh and India.

She has worked with several international non-governmental organisation including USAID, where she led Effective-Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (E-WASH) projects across states in Nigeria engaging in advocacy for WASH and environmental protection. Following the displacement of people in northern Nigeria due to the boko haram terrorism, Mimi joined Christian Aid Nigeria to support displaced women, working on forest conservation, resettlement strategies, hygiene and sanitation uptake, and psychosocial support for women and children affected by conflict.

Mimi is keen about forest conservation and environmental justice for African women and is using the opportunity of her work in UAF-Africa to support and advocate for women’s rights in the environment and climate justice sector.

She is passionate about traveling for community engagement and reading.
