Schools Infrastructure Improvement Programme (SIIP)

Improving public school infrastructure and providing quality basic education for all

Overview

School Infrastructure Improvement Programme (SIIP) is an initiative by Access to Humanitarian Assistance and Development Initiative (AHDI) to help improve and bridge infrastructural gaps in educational institutions, especially public preprimary and primary schools.
The well-being of students and achievements of a school can be influenced by physical infrastructure, which impacts positively on the social development of a child. It is important to have a safe and healthy environment (which includes essentials such as sanitation facilities, sporting and recreational facilities, instructional materials and tools, power supply, furniture etcetera).
In Nigeria today, inadequate infrastructures is still a major factor hindering quality education. Quality infrastructure facilitates better instruction, improves student outcomes, and reduces dropout rates, among other benefits. In other words, the condition of the schools directly affects the performance of the students.
Over 265 million children are currently out of school and 22% of them are of primary school age according to the United Nations. Therefore, the enormousness of the challenge is to curb the increase of the number of out of school children by providing basic infrastructures that will help stimulate learning and create healthy environment that will help keep children in school.
