“Stay In School Initiative” (SISI) is a programme with goals of making children remain in school, access quality education and improve their educational performance.

Over 265 million children are currently out of school and 22% of them are of primary school age according to the United Nations. In Nigeria, the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) reported that the population of Nigeria’s out-of-school children has risen from 10.5 million to 13.2 million, one of the highest figures in the world.

Many children are out of school due to economic impediments, poverty and high cost of education. For the fact that about one-third of countries in the developing regions in the world have not achieved gender parity in primary education, the girl-child is more affected by these limiting factors and challenges. It is therefore of utmost necessity to activate practical initiatives, interventions and programs that will deter children who are currently in school not to drop out of school and add to the number of out-of-school children, which is already at alarming pinnacle. For quality education to be provided to the children of impoverished families who are the most susceptible to dropping out of school, investment is needed in direct educational supports to keep them in school.

Access to Humanitarian Assistance and Development Initiative (AHDI) subscribes to the UN’s sustainable development agenda that by 2030, gender disparities in education would be eliminated and that all girls and boys will complete free, equitable and quality primary education.

In order to support global actions in education, (AHDI) through SISI, a pro-poor program will be providing educational grants to selected pupils in Abuja, Nigeria and its environs. The grant will enable children (especially the girl-child) from poor background cover educational expenses that will enable them stay in school and access quality education. The grant will cover eligible costs such as school fees, writing materials, textbooks, uniforms and other basic educational needs for a period of one year.
